What are the liftgate weight and size limits?
A liftgate is the hydraulic platform on the back of the truck that raises and lowers freight when there's no loading dock or forklift. Its limits are physical, so plan around them:
Liftgates are typically capable of lifting between 1,500 and 3,500 lbs, depending on the truck and carrier.
- Mothership Carrier Network: Up to 2,500 lbs per handling unit. Freight can measure up to 86″ in either length or width and stand up to 94″ high. For example, freight measuring 86″ L × 60″ W × 94″ H would be accepted.
- National LTL Partner Carriers: Select carriers can accommodate handling units weighing up to 3,500 lbs and measuring up to 86″ L × 60″ W × 96″ H.
If a single handling unit exceeds the applicable liftgate limits, split the freight across pallets, use a dock or forklift, or arrange a terminal pickup or delivery.
When do I need a liftgate?
Add a liftgate when there's no loading dock and no forklift at a stop, and for most residential deliveries. If a dock or forklift is available at both ends, you don't need one and pallets can be heavier. Tell us about both the pickup and delivery sites at booking so the right equipment is priced in.
