Los Angeles Wildfire

Raging flames driven by a fierce windstorm forced the evacuation Tuesday of the Pacific Palisades, a coastal neighborhood about 20 miles west of downtown Los Angeles that is home to some 24,000 people.

Gusts of up to 100 miles per hour, the strongest Southern California has experienced in more than a decade, were forecast through lunchtime Wednesday, threatening to down trees, knock out power and fuel wildfires across a wide region.

The California Department of Transportation said that all lanes of the Pacific Coast Highway near the fire would be closed for an unknown period. The closures have led to severe traffic in the area. Local officials are telling residents to find other routes.

Hazardous Winds in Southern California
Southern California is bracing for what the National Weather Service calls a "life-threatening and destructive windstorm" driven by strong Santa Ana winds. Gusts of up to 80 mph, and as high as 100 mph in mountain and foothill areas, are expected to affect key shipping routes, including the 118 and 210 corridors, as well as areas like Pasadena, Burbank, and Malibu.

These extreme winds have prompted red flag warnings and high wind advisories across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, leading to potential delays in freight movement and heightened wildfire risks. Public safety power shutoffs are under consideration, with over 400,000 customers in Los Angeles, Ventura, Riverside, and surrounding counties at risk of outages.

Snowstorm Impacting New Mexico and Texas
A powerful winter storm is sweeping across New Mexico and parts of Texas, bringing snow, freezing temperatures, and strong winds. Dangerous crosswinds reaching up to 55 mph are creating hazardous conditions for freight carriers, particularly in areas like Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and Las Cruces.

A winter storm advisory is in effect for much of southern New Mexico, where one to three inches of snow is expected. The advisory will last through Friday morning. Cold temperatures are also dropping wind chills near zero, with northern parts of New Mexico experiencing sub-zero conditions.
