What is the NMFC field?

The NMFC field allows you to enter a National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) code for your shipment. This is an optional field that helps clarify the contents of your freight and may reduce the chances of reclassification disputes with carriers.

Do I need to fill out the NMFC field?

No — entering an NMFC code is completely optional. If you're not sure what to enter, you can leave it blank and still proceed with your shipment.

Where do I find the NMFC field?

You’ll find the NMFC (optional) field in the Cargo section of the shipment form, right next to the Freight Class field.

What should I enter in the NMFC field?

Enter the NMFC code that best represents your freight. This should be a numeric code (e.g., 1234-01 or 123456). The system accepts up to 6 characters.

Why should I enter an NMFC code?

Providing the correct NMFC code can help ensure that your shipment is classified properly by the carrier, minimizing the risk of reclassification charges or delays.

What happens to the NMFC code after I enter it?

If entered, the NMFC code will appear on:

  • Your Bill of Lading (BOL) next to the Freight Class

This is typically shared with the carrier as part of the shipment documentation.

Can I edit the NMFC code after booking my shipment?

Yes, you can edit your shipment details, including the NMFC code, before the shipment is picked up. Just head to the cargo section in your dashboard.

What if I don’t know the correct NMFC code?

If you’re unsure, we recommend referring to your product’s documentation or asking the manufacturer. You can also leave the field blank if you don’t have a code.

Will entering an incorrect NMFC code affect my shipment?

If the carrier determines that the NMFC code is incorrect, they may reclassify the shipment and adjust the charges. That’s why providing an accurate NMFC code can help avoid disputes.
