Do I need a liftgate, and what does it cost?
A liftgate (called a "tail lift" outside the US) raises and lowers freight when there's no loading dock or forklift. Included free on the Mothership Carrier Network (local); National LTL carriers charge a fee that varies by carrier. Select the "Liftgate" accessorial when booking, and the applicable fee will be included automatically. Details below.
What is a liftgate?
Liftgates are used when the cargo is too heavy or cumbersome to be loaded by hand. They are attached to the back of a truck and function hydraulically, typically capable of lifting anywhere from 1,500 to 3,500 lbs. On the Mothership Carrier Network, liftgate shipments can weigh up to 2,500 lbs per handling unit, measure up to 86″ in either length or width, and stand up to 94″ high. Select National LTL Partner Carriers can accommodate up to 3,500 lbs and 86″ L × 60″ W × 96″ H per handling unit. They are necessary when there is no loading dock at the pickup or delivery location.
Is there an extra charge for liftgates?
Most carriers charge extra, but Mothership includes liftgates and pallet jacks as a standard part of our Mothership Carrier Network service. Please select “Liftgate” when booking your local shipment and our system will allocate one for you at no charge.
We partner with trusted national carriers for National LTL Partner Carrier shipments, and they do charge a fee for a liftgate. They also may charge an additional processing fee if the shipper fails to mention that a liftgate is required. Prices vary by carrier. Please select "Liftgate" when booking and your shipment price will be automatically adjusted.
